COURSE DESCRIPTION:
• This is a six-hour training aimed at providing an introduction to theories of stress and coping and stress management techniquess for the counselor, nurse, or other professional.
• This course directly relates to the domains of assessment, counseling, case management, client education, and professional responsibility, with a specific substance abuse focus.
OBJECTIVES: (Behavioral Terminology)
Upon completion, the learner will be able to identify:
1. Major theories of Stress and Coping;
2. Types of stress and stressors;
3. Health consequences of stress and coping;
4. Appropriate assessments, interventions, professionalism, and supportive measures such as case management and client education for the professional who is caring for the chemically impaired individual;
5. The underlying neurobiology of stress and the relaxation response, as applies to professional self-care and the provision of care for chemically- impaired individuals;
6. Stress management techniques that can be applied in private and professional settings.

• This course directly relates to the domains of assessment, counseling, case management, client education, and professional responsibility, with a specific substance abuse focus.

1. Theory underlying the use of evidence based relaxation and stress management techniques to treat persons with substance use disorders
2. The Theory underlying Nuero-psycho-endocrinology and Stress Management
3. Use of evidence based stress management techniques to improve personal, social, and occupational function among the Helping Professions
4. Practical techniques, including Guided imagery, mindfulness and meditation that can be utilized in private and professional settings
